Scientifica 2023: soap bubbles and minimal surfaces

At this year's Scientifica, the Department of Mathematics invited visitors to experiment with soap bubbles and learn more about the topic of minimal surfaces. At the exhibition stand, they could play around with a giant soap skin and experiment with wire models of common geometic forms.

Kangaroo competition now in Ukrainian too

袋鼠的数学,一个最大的数学ematics competitions in the world, took place on 16 March. More than 50,000 Swiss schoolchildren took part in this year’s challenge. To ensure that all the young participants understand the maths problems, the questions are translated into various languages – including, as of this year, Ukrainian. Alexey is a schoolboy from Ukraine. He has taken part in the competition several times in his home country and spoke to us about his experiences.

Winners of the Flatlander competition

Imagine two-dimensional beings called flatlanders. What does their universe look like? Do flatlanders live on a flat surface or are there other surfaces on which they could move around? School classes participating in our competition have had to come up with an answer to those questions and create an object that represents their idea of a flatlander universe.
