Kangaroo competition now in Ukrainian too

袋鼠的数学,一个最大的数学ematics competitions in the world, took place on 16 March. More than 50,000 Swiss schoolchildren took part in this year’s challenge. To ensure that all the young participants understand the maths problems, the questions are translated into various languages – including, as of this year, Ukrainian. Alexey is a schoolboy from Ukraine. He has taken part in the competition several times in his home country and spoke to us about his experiences.

Imagine two-dimensional beings called flatlanders. What does their universe look like? Do flatlanders live on a flat surface or are there other surfaces on which they could move around? School classes participating in our competition have had to come up with an answer to those questions and create an object that represents their idea of a flatlander universe.

What sounds impossible in our everyday life would be completely normal if we lived in a space called a 3-torus. Mathematician Jeffrey Weeks makes ideas like these accessible to the greater public. We talked with him about his younger self, his motivation for popularising mathematics, and the games he developed to make other shapes of space come alive.
