R
R is a flexible, free and open source software with a plethora of functions. R is widely used amongst statisticians, in many other research areas and in industry. It is a dialect of the programming language S and thus related to S-PLUS.
For a detailed description of R, see the website ofexternal pageThe R Project for Statistical Computingcall_made.R is available for UNIX / Linux, Windows and Mac.
Availability at ETH Zurich
R is GNU software, and can thus be downloaded free of charge via the Internet, for instance from theETH mirrorof theexternal pageCRANcall_madenetwork.
Consulting, Courses and Relevant Lectures
Consulting
The Seminar for Statistics offers consulting services for R. Since R is the main statistical software used by the Seminar for Statistics, our consulting services are at their best when this software is involved.
Courses
We offer regular introductory courses for R in the form ofwe also offer introductory and intermediate courses for companies, for instance in-house courses.
external pageZurich R Coursescall_madeoffer a series of introductory and advanced courses on statistical data analysis with R on a regular basis.
Relevant lectures
The following lectures are focused on using R:
- Using R for Statistical Data Analysis and Graphics.Takes place each autumn semester.
- Applied Statistical Regression (Angewandte statistische Regression).这节课是also taught each autumn semester. Its tutorials/exercise hours make intense use of R.
- Applied Analysis of Variance and Experimental Design.Takes place each autumn semester.
- Computational Statistics.这节课是taught each spring. The exercises are heavily focused on using R.
An introductory class in statistics is a prerequisite for the last three lectures listed above (seecourse cataloguefor more details).
Literature
A classic textbook on the S language (on which R is based) is:
- J.M. Chambers and T.J. Hastie, Statistical Models in S, Wadsworth & Brooks/Cole, 1992 (This is often called the `White book'.)
(ETH-BIB 755 142)
TheCRAN network(Documentation - Manuals) refers to many other online resources, books and other documentation for R.

User Group
There are mailing lists for R users. For more information and to subscribe, seeexternal pageThe R Project for Statistical Computingcall_made(Mailing Lists). The primary mailing list is called "R-help"; it offers swift and competent answers to problems with R.
Newsletter
Since January 2001, R has had an onlineexternal page通讯call_made, which in 2009 became theexternal pageR Journalcall_made.
