Scientifica 2023: soap bubbles and minimal surfaces

At this year's Scientifica, the Department of Mathematics invited visitors to experiment with soap bubbles and learn more about the topic of minimal surfaces. At the exhibition stand, they could play around with a giant soap skin and experiment with wire models of common geometic forms.

Scientifica, the science festival of ETH and University of Zurich, took place on the theme "What holds the world together". With a wide range of activities, like exhibition stands, workshops, and science cafés the visitors had the chance to gain an insight into the current research work, try out the latest technologies, and talk directly to the scientists.

The Department's stand was very well attended. The stand personnel took the opportunity to explain the topic of minimal surfaces to the visitors and to answer questions. With the help ofa giant soap skin and geometric shapes made of wire, young and old were able to experiment on their own and observe how the filigree soap skins kept taking on new and surprising shapes.
